How long does it take to train a goldendoodle... or for it to be house broken? Can you do this on your own or do you have to hire someone? If you have to hire someone, how much does it cost?

"Training Goldendoodles will vary from trainer to trainer for your area. You can enroll your doodle into obedience classes as young as 8 weeks of age, however, we do recommend that you wait until your doodle has had its full set of vaccinations just in case other canine in the classes has a cold or other issue that might transfer to your puppy during the course of training.
All puppies can begin newspaper training from the day its eyes are open so long as the breeder continues the repetitive training. This is simply done by placing the puppy on clean newspapers often through out the day. As the puppy matures, the repetitive motion helps the puppy learn to use the bathroom on the newspaper. Housebreaking for outdoors can being as soon as the puppy is six to eight weeks of age, but we would advise to wait until your puppy has had at least five rounds of puppy vaccines to help boost its immunity from the dangers of being outdoors or in public. Your vet can best help you with helping you locate a professional trainer as well as placing your puppy on a vaccination schedule. All dog owners can learn how to train their own dogs. There are great videos on the market as well as books that can assist you. We recommend that if you can afford it, to have a trainer come to your home and work with you and the dog so that the trainer can better assess what your actual needs are and what the actual needs of the dog are. Caesar Milan is probably one of the best dog trainers out there and he has some great books as well as videos on the market that you might find of intertest."

We also meant to say that prices will vary from trainer to trainer and you would have to contact the trainer you are interested in using and ask them what they charge. Obedience classes can usually be found to be held at local schools or the YMCA and are usually listed in your local paper or you can check with your local shelter who sometimes has dates and prices for enrollment or even upcoming events that may be scheduled in your area.

A few points from another point of view

I am a professional groomer and I adore my goldendoodle clients. They are very lovable dogs. I agree with your point about AKC and the protests against these dogs. Irresponsible breeders aren't necessarily limited to hybrid breeders.
I do, however want to address letting clients stay while doing their dogs. I have a policy against this for several reasons. Dogs are very hard to groom when they perceive me as keeping them from the one person they most want to be with.
Well meaning owners telling their dog "It's ok", or "good dog" almost always sets them off and it takes me twice as long to do the groom. But, of course, the owner doesn't want to pay for that extra time. The other reason is liability. If an owner
is bitten by a dog, even their own, or hurt in any way, I am liable. The insurance company will not cover anyone that is not an employee being in the grooming area. Anyone is welcome to tour the facility at any time, but not while thier dog is being
groomed and not without an employee conducting the tour. It's not because we are hiding anything, but we have to protect ourselves, our businesses and our clients.

I agree also about not shaving a double coated dog. But, in reality, most dogs only see a brush when they are broought in to be groomed. It should be brought up that in case of this kind of neglect, a very short trim may be the only humane solution. Dematting
is painful and stressful.

I also am concerned about recommending products that aren't for dogs. Tearless shampoo and Pantene might be totally harmless, but the courts percieve this as "off label use" Should any clients ask that I use these things, I would have to refuse.
There are many dog products out there that do wonderfully for dryer coats. If you visit any of the groomer's sites online you'll see there are many groomers everywhere that are passionate about whats best for their clients.

Also, using human products on a dogs coat should not cause any issues whatsoever. Human products used on a dogs' coat is much safer than many dog products, especially dog dips. We use "equate lice shampoo" on puppies instead of dog dips because the pyrithin levels in the human product are enough to kill fleas on a puppy, but not high enough to cause death or toxic problems, where dog dips could. We've used human shampoo for our Goldendoodles since 1999 and have never had a problem. Human products aren't toxic to dogs, otherwise they would be toxic for people. Again, our grooming information is strictly for dog owners and not groomers, themselves as far as suggestions for products.
As far as putting a dog to sleep just to groom them or sedating them for grooming, even if its a vet who is giving the meds or sleeping gas, I don't recommend it. Many deaths have happened from this and I would be really pissed off if I left my dog with a groomer who was perfectly fine when dropped off and then come back to discover my dog died while in their care. I have had some dogs who are difficult to groom, but I just ask another person to help me because trust me, unless a person has experience with a trouble dog, they don't know how exhausting it is! I've had times when I could only shave down ONE dog because it was so exhausting trying to hold it down and shave them down at the same time. You literally get muscle failure and feel like you've had an entire work out when done. Some dogs freak out when hearing the clippers even though they've been groomed before. Or for some reason, they don't want to stand on the grooming table. In either case, two people should be used..three if necessary. lol

Your read about the coat changes on my website or here on this site. Goldendoodles do go through 10-15 coat changes/phases from birth up until they turn 1 yr of age. My goodness! ten children??? ugh! AND raising dogs??? They have their hands full, that's for sure. Nothing wrong with having dogs outside in a kennel run......dogs have lived outside since the beginning days of man. Perhaps her kid held onto the dog so that he or she would not run at you and scare you. Some people, even if its a golden retriever coming at you, freak out when a dog runs at them and a Golden Retriever can be a jumper which would freak people out even more. I don't like dogs to jump up on people especially if they are visiting with nice clothes on. Just because a breeder "brings out 2 adult dogs and says they are the puppy's parents" doesn't make it so. I'm not saying your breeder brought out dogs that were NOT the parents, but I don't put much into breeders supposedly showing people the parent dogs. Unless you have a DNA kit with you and a way to immediately identify those supposed parent dogs to the puppy, how do you really know your seeing the "parents" ??
You don't. We assign our pups to their families and we only bring out their assigned puppy or dog. Less confusion...less hassle....no worrying about which one to select from and its a much easier process for everyone all the way around. I do agree that your breeder did the right thing in not letting you into their kennel area. We don't allow that either. Canine communicable diseases can be spread by visitors via their shoes, hair, clothing and anything they are carrying on them.
